Ungkapan ini kudapatkan dari Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Waktu menerbitkan cerita tentang Sherlock Holmes yang merendahkan Auguste Dupin, sang penulis mendapat banyak surat haters lantaran dianggap menghina detektif dari Perancis tersebut, padahal Dupin sudah ada bahkan sebelum kata "detektif" ada (salute to Edgar Allan Poe for that!). Pada saat itulah Sir Arthur Conan Doyle menjawab para haters tersebut dengan kalimat terkenal tersebut: "The doll and its maker are never identical." Boneka dan pembuatnya tidaklah sama.

Kata-kata yang, sungguh, powerful banget--dan menjadi panduan utamaku dalam menulis.

Sebagai penulis fiksi, kita selalu tergoda untuk menuliskan cerita dengan tokoh utama yang mirip dengan diri kita sendiri. Namun, jika kita terus-menerus menulis tokoh utama yang mirip dengan diri kita, kemampuan kita tidak bakalan berkembang dan karya kita akan menjadi karya yang "begitu-begitu saja". Jadi, tantanglah diri kita hari ini, sanggupkah kita membuat cerita yang tidak ada hubungannya dengan diri kita, kepribadian kita, minat kita, kehidupan kita. Jika kalian bisa melakukannya, aku bisa dengan yakin berkata pada kalian, "You're one great writer."
